Research & Infrastructure

Why Research & Infrastructure Matter
Hygiene insecurity remains under-recognized because it has historically lacked consistent measurement, coordinated systems, and sustained investment. Hope & Comfort is addressing these gaps by working to build:

-
Statewide distribution infrastructure
-
Field-leading research and measurement tools
-
Coordinated data systems
-
Cross-sector partnerships
-
Policy and advocacy alignment

Together, these elements allow hygiene access to move from fragmented charity to durable public infrastructure.
Building the Evidence Base
Hope & Comfort is developing the nation’s first validated measure of hygiene insecurity in partnership with a nationally recognized research organization. This work includes:
-
Establishing baseline data on hygiene insecurity
-
Developing and validating a screening tool
-
Examining correlations between hygiene access and health outcomes
-
Contributing publishable research to inform policy and funding decisions
This research positions hygiene access alongside food and housing insecurity as a measurable social determinant of health.

Statewide Infrastructure in Action
Hope & Comfort operates the Commonwealth’s largest coordinated hygiene distribution system.
In the most recent year:
5.1 million hygiene products distributed statewide
More than 625 community partners
More than 110 cities and towns served
Our infrastructure includes:
-
Centralized warehousing and logistics
-
Integrated inventory management systems
-
Standardized fulfillment workflows
-
Online partner ordering platform
-
Allocation based on verified community demand
These systems allow distribution to scale while maintaining operational discipline and accountability.

Elevating awareness of the SNAP benefit gap
-
Partnering with school districts to normalize hygiene distribution
-
Adapting distribution models during public health and immigration disruptions
Hygiene access is foundational infrastructure for health, stability, and dignity.
Looking Ahead
Hope & Comfort continues to expand statewide infrastructure while building the research foundation needed for long-term solutions.
We are focused on:
Scaling distribution responsibly
Strengthening frontline community systems
Advancing national research and policy alignment
Establishing hygiene access as a recognized public priority
The need remains significant. The systems required to close the gap are in place and growing.
